Faster, better, cheaper…choose two. You’ve probably heard that “reality” in one form or another. However, when it comes to software quality, there is quite a bit more competition between different, but important, quality attributes (Kan, 2003, p. 5):

I think the chart is useful for showing the tension between desired quality attributes (especially considering your disparate customers may have differing priorities for the various attributes)…but, unlike “faster, better, cheaper”…sometimes the attributes are actually supportive.
But no, you generally can’t have your cake and eat it too. 🙂
